Forthcoming AAL call for ICT solutions supporting older adults

Date: 17/11/2016

The European programme Active & Assisted Living (AAL) will launch a call for proposals in February 2017 on the theme "AAL packages/Integrated solutions". The intention is to stimulate the development of "packages", integrating different solutions based on information and communication technologies (ICT), to support the active, healthy and independent life of older adults.

The objective of the joint research programme Active and Assisted Living (AAL) is to enhance the quality of life of elderly people through the use of ICT. Previous AAL calls have shown impressive results culminating in effective and practical solutions. However, many solutions address only a specific need, have not yet been integrated and incorporated into everyday life and have not been sufficiently evaluated.

Integrated solutions

End-users are increasingly asking for well integrated solutions that are intuitive, useful and personalised and take all aspects of life into consideration, also informal and formal caregivers whenever relevant. In addition, end-users – in particular secondary and tertiary ones such as caregivers and policy makers – have an urgent need for proven evidence about the effects and effectiveness of AAL solutions.

The 2017 AAL call focuses on a two-fold challenge:

  1. Develop packages integrating different solutions that address the needs and wishes of end-users and add value to their lives. Since peoples’ wishes, aspirations and needs evolve over time, packages should be designed with built-in flexibility and a variety of components in order to meet diverse individual situations and to remain attractive to end-users over time. End-users expect proposed solutions to be affordable, user-friendly, secure, and reliable. Packages should be based on existing and/or open platforms.
  2. Extensively test and evaluate packages in order to provide meaningful and significant results.

Further call information

The aim of this call is to support innovative, transnational and multi-disciplinary collaborative projects. Proposal must demonstrate a clear route to market and added-value for the different types of end-users. Call information is currently still subject to change. The finalised call is planned to be published in February 2017. An AAL Central Info & Partnering Day is planned for 6 March 2017 in Brussels.
