Manufacturing industry plays an important role in Luxembourg’s economy. According to the manufacturing ecosystem mapping produced by Luxinnovation, the ecosystem includes almost 620 companies.
52% of the companies have manufacturing as their core activity, and 48% are digitalisation enablers. Due to stricter selection criteria for core manufacturing entities, the total number of companies is lower than in the previous version of the mapping from 2021.
Most core manufacturing entities in Luxembourg are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Two-thirds employ less than 50 people. 18 firms have more than 500 employees.
Geographically, the sector is concentrated in the south-west corner of the country. 3% of manufacturing companies are located in an area stretching from Luxembourg City to Capellen and Esch-sur-Alzette. The industry is also present in the north of the country with more than 100 businesses located north of Luxembourg City.
Almost one-third of the 321 core manufacturing companies are active in the metal product sub-sector, reflecting the industrial specialisation of the country. Other important sub-sectors include machinery and equipment, rubber and plastics, agrifood and tobacco, and chemicals, oil and gas.
The mapping covers 298 digitalisation enablers that are essential for driving innovation towards smart manufacturing. 37% of them provide consulting and assessment services enabling companies to implement more innovative and digital manufacturing processes. Another 35% provide digital solutions making industrial operations and other business functions more digitalised and data-driven.
The most commonly offered technology is cloud computing. There are also many enablers offering digital transformation services such as software development, IT infrastructure, automation and data analytics.
