Security & Defence
Defence is a critical pillar of national security and technological sovereignty, encompassing a wide range of activities from advanced engineering and cybersecurity to space surveillance and strategic logistics. As global geopolitical dynamics evolve and defence technologies rapidly advance, countries are increasingly investing in innovative capabilities to strengthen resilience and maintain strategic autonomy.
Major shift in the national security strategy
Luxembourg is undergoing a major shift in its national security strategy. In light of rising global tensions and a common European effort, the Luxembourg government has announced plans to fast-track its defence spending target. Originally set for 2030, the goal of allocating 2% of the country’s gross national income (GNI) to defence, as defined by NATO, is now expected to be met by the end of 2025. This accelerated timeline marks a significant increase from the current defence budget of €780 million, with projected spending reaching approximately €1.18 billion (Source: Chambre des Députés).
In this context, R&D plays a key role in helping companies, including those not traditionally active in the defence and security sector, to innovate and bring new technologies to a rapidly evolving market.
