AI in industry: Positive momentum, but gaps remain

A recent survey conducted in Luxembourg highlights promising progress in AI adoption across industries, while also identifying critical needs for stronger governance and infrastructure.

FEDIL, in collaboration with the Luxembourg Digital Innovation Hub (L-DIH) and Luxinnovation, has released the results of a nationwide survey assessing the penetration and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) in Luxembourg’s industrial landscape.

The survey gathered responses from 114 companies of varying sizes and sectors, including manufacturing (28%), ICT (16%), construction (16%), and transport and logistics (11%).

A strategic asset...

The findings underscore a strong belief in AI’s potential to drive business transformation. Companies anticipate significant improvements in process optimisation and control, along with measurable financial benefits. In the manufacturing sector in particular, 8 out of 10 companies expect clear gains in cost reduction and efficiency.

An impressive 63% of respondents report a relatively advanced level of AI maturity, reflecting a proactive approach to integrating AI into their operations.

Generative AI is broadly seen as a major opportunity. Many businesses are already embracing this new wave of innovation, recognising its capacity to boost productivity, enhance customer service, and streamline internal workflows.

… but structural challenges hinder the potential for adoption

Despite this positive outlook, several structural barriers continue to slow down broader AI adoption:

  • Limited accessibility and quality of data,
  • A lack of in-house expertise and difficulty identifying high-impact use cases,
  • A fragmented AI ecosystem,
  • Concerns about data sovereignty.

“The results clearly show that Luxembourg’s industrial sector is committed to leveraging the transformative potential of AI. The momentum is real—but so are the challenges. While optimism is strong, the survey highlights the urgent need to turn this enthusiasm into sustained implementation,” note the survey’s initiators.

To address these challenges, the survey recommends several priority actions:

  • Investing in targeted training and upskilling initiatives,
  • Improving coordination and visibility across the AI ecosystem,
  • Promoting broader, more consistent adoption of robust data and AI governance frameworks.

The full survey results are available on the FEDIL website.
