On 17 September, immerse yourself in the heart of the forest and discover how cutting-edge technologies are transforming the way we manage this essential ressource.
Forests, both essential and fragile ecosystems, are now facing a range of unprecedented challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss, economic pressures, and a growing demand for locally sourced wood.
In response, forest management must become more precise, preventive, and technologically equipped. That’s where innovation plays a key role.
As part of the Interreg W.A.V.E. project, the Smart Forest event will offer a unique, on-site experience in the Ellergronn forest (Esch-sur-Alzette), providing a firsthand look at how digital tools are revolutionising forest stewardship.
This morning event targets professionals from the wood industry, regional development stakeholders, spatial data experts, and innovative companies.
“The goal is to showcase how digital tools, such as drones, digital twins, 3D modelling, and geospatial data, are fundamentally reshaping forest management,” explains Caroline Holz, Project Engineer at Luxinnovation.
The programme includes expert insights from the Administration de la nature et des forêts (ANF), Luxinnovation, SpaceTime, and other W.A.V.E. project partners, alongside hands-on demonstrations of drone flights, live forest data collection, and dynamic visualisations of forest conditions.
Attendees will also engage in knowledge-sharing around wood traceability, carbon stock assessment, and the educational use of collected data.
“Thanks to these technologies, it’s now possible to map individual trees, anticipate risks such as fires, disease, or drought, optimize forest management, and improve resource traceability,” adds Ms Holz. “These advances also help increase the value of local wood, support decision-making, and raise public awareness about the importance of healthy forests.”
Smart Forest is part of the European W.A.V.E. (Wood Added Value Enhancement) project, which aims to strengthen the timber value chain across the Greater Region. Supported by the European Union’s Interreg Greater Region 2021–2027 programme, W.A.V.E. focuses on technological innovation, cross-border collaboration, and building forest resilience in the face of global change.
