Construction in the age of digital transition

The BIMLux and Sustainable Construction for Resilient Cities event on 12 and 13 November will bring together specialists and professionals committed to addressing the digital and environmental challenges of the construction sector.

Previously, there were two separate events: one dedicated to BIMLux and another to sustainable construction for resilient cities. There is now a single event combining both worlds, providing a space for conferences, workshops and round tables that bring together experts and stakeholders from across the sector. The ambition is to tackle the digital transition and the environmental challenges of construction collectively.

Initiated around thirty years ago, Building Information Modelling (BIM) encompasses the tools and processes that enable the modelling of all data related to any built structure, in order to create a documented digital twin. This approach, aligned with the principles of the circular economy, makes it possible to build more, better and at lower cost, while reducing resource waste.

Fostering dialogue between technological innovation and sustainability

It was therefore natural that the event dedicated to this rapidly developing model should come closer to the one focusing on sustainable construction and resilient cities. The result is a unique gathering organised by the Resource Centre for Building Technologies and Innovation (CRTI-B), the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and Neobuild, in partnership with the Chamber of Skilled Crafts, Luxinnovation and the Order of Architects and Consulting Engineers (OAI), with the support of Metabuilding Labs, Interreg Europe and Greater Green+ Interreg Greater Region – Großregion.

The aim of these two days is to foster dialogue between technological innovation and sustainability, while sharing practical solutions to current challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in numerous workshops, conferences, testimonials and demonstrations from professionals in the field.

Wood and construction of tomorrow

With the presence of Lex Delles, Minister of the Economy, Energy, SMEs and Tourism, who will deliver the opening address, the event will also welcome Prof. Matthias Sulzer, member of the Steering Committee, Head of the Department of Engineering Sciences and co-head of the research priority area Built Environment at EMPA, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology. Together, they will offer a forward-looking perspective on the construction sector and its future.

The national innovation agency Luxinnovation will also present the range of services available to support the ecosystem: national R&D&I legislation, European funding opportunities, the integration of artificial intelligence and digital transformation. Concrete examples of innovation in projects, methodologies and products will be showcased, with a focus on how ecosystem stakeholders can be supported.

The W.A.V.E. project will also be present on a joint exhibition stand shared with Luxinnovation, highlighting initiatives that promote a high-performance, sustainable and innovative local wood industry. These initiatives make it possible to envisage solutions that combine this ancestral material with the construction of tomorrow.

In addition, the Greater Green+ project will host an ideation workshop aimed at boosting the off-site construction sector, from the prefabrication of elements to turnkey modules. “We will explore project opportunities to support the industrialisation of construction,” explains Caroline Holz, Project Engineer at Luxinnovation.

W.A.V.E. and Greater Green+ are projects supported by the European Union as part of the Interreg Greater Region 2021–2027 programme.
