The SCMM Industry Day 2025, which will take place on 2 October, aims to connect civil innovation and defence applications for a sustainable future.
The future of sustainable mobility is being shaped today, and the Sustainable Composite Materials & Manufacturing (SCMM) Industry Day 2025 is the place where it happens. On 2 October 2025, the SCMM Innovation Centre of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), in collaboration with Luxinnovation, will host the second edition of this flagship event dedicated to the materials community and sustainable mobility applications.
This year, the main topic will be “Sustainable and lightweight composite technologies: From civil to dual-use applications – How to bridge civil technologies with defence needs?”
As lightweight, high-performance and environmentally friendly materials become essential to tomorrow’s transport and infrastructure, their potential for dual-use – applicable both in civil and defence contexts – is gaining strategic attention. The SCMM Industry Day 2025 provides a unique forum where researchers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, SMEs and policymakers come together to exchange knowledge, explore new ideas and forge cross-sector collaborations.
This year’s edition highlights the synergies between the civil and defence sectors, with a focus on lightweight composite technologies and their potential to address challenges such as enhanced mobility, energy efficiency and operational durability across multiple domains – land, air, space and unmanned vehicles.

Keynotes and panels will feature insights from leading OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, who will showcase breakthrough innovations in sustainable mobility and dual-use technologies.
Alongside presentations, participants will experience hands-on demonstrations of SCMM’s capabilities, including cutting-edge research developed at LIST and promising results in zero-emission transport solutions.
“We are seeing an increasing convergence of needs between civilian industries and defence,” explains Caroline Muller, Business Relationship Manager at Luxinnovation. “Materials and technologies developed for electric vehicles, drones or aerospace often have direct implications for military use. Supporting dual-use applications not only strengthens Luxembourg’s industrial competitiveness, it also reinforces its role in ensuring European strategic autonomy.”
With its mission to foster innovation, empower companies and support national economic development, Luxinnovation plays a pivotal role in connecting civil industrial players with opportunities in the defence sector.
Defence is increasingly looking for cutting-edge, sustainable solutions that already exist or are being developed in civilian industries. Rebecca Damotte, Luxinnovation
Through its dedicated expertise and network, the national innovation agency helps companies navigate the dual-use landscape, develop compliant projects and access funding and European initiatives.
“Defence is no longer a closed sector; it is increasingly looking for cutting-edge, sustainable solutions that already exist or are being developed in civilian industries,” says Rebecca Damotte, Defence Innovation & Technology Advisor at Luxinnovation. “That’s where we come in: Luxinnovation is the national point of contact for any industry players interested in defence-related innovation, whether they're developing materials, electronics or smart mobility systems. We facilitate the exchange and make sure promising ideas can scale.”
Beyond knowledge sharing, B2B matchmaking sessions will help participants identify market-driven partnerships and applied research collaborations. In a rapidly evolving global context, events like SCMM Industry Day are essential to strengthen Luxembourg’s industrial resilience and technological leadership – especially in areas where civil and defence objectives align.
The event will end with a networking cocktail, providing a relaxed setting to connect with peers and decision-makers from across sectors.
